Officers of the UK will be not capable to stop sportspersons importing steroids to the UK, when they come to participate in the 2012 London Olympics. However intake of steroids is forbidden in sports, personal administration of these medications is not criminal in the UK. Just distribution of steroids is claimed to be illicit in this country. Thus, if anybody desires to import amount of anabolic steroids that is essentially large, he/she will not be allowed to do it.
Before Olympics took place in Australia, Canada and China, governments of these countries modified legislation related to import and administration of steroids at least temporally. But the British government doesn’t want to alter steroid laws for the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Ironically, although the government of the UK doesn’t want to make self-administration of steroids illegal, Britain sportspersons are banned for lifetime, if they administer anabolic steroids. As for the WADA Code, sportspersons who take prohibited drugs are banned for two years.
Hugh Robertson, the Olympic minister, notes that it is needed to have a universal law related to sentencing. He insists on at least 4 years or even longer. Although this minister is supported by the British Olympic Association, the UK Anti-Doping Agency doesn’t agree with such harsh sanction. The CEO of the UK Anti-Doping Agency Andi Parkinson believes that some sanctions must be milder.
The Olympic minister admits that there are different opinions in sports and it’s not well but he doesn’t ask the CEO of the UKAD to resign.
The spokesperson for Hugh Robertson has noticed that any athlete can have steroids in his/her luggage, when he/she comes to London. But the quantity of steroids must confirm that he/she has them just for personal administration. The spokesperson has noted that it is not illegal for an athlete to take steroids under laws of the UK but if any athlete is caught using forbidden medications, he/she will be punished under anti-doping laws.
The UKAD noticed that they would cooperate with border control officials. Information about sportspersons will be utilized by anti-doping officials.
5, 000 drug test, including 1, 000 blood tests will be conducted by the International Olympic Committee.
