Scientists want to find alternative products to anabolic steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs. They are sure that sportspersons may soon have another way to induce muscles. The Salk Institute has said that the efforts of the scientists have got success. Late researches have displayed that suppression of a genome regulator which is known as “NCoR1” causes enhacement of muscle size, energy and endurance. The leader of the studies conducted in the Salk Institute, Ronald Evans, notices that this knowledge can contribute in development of certain new products which will benefit not only for sportsmen and bodybuilders that train but also for people that have sedentary lifestyle.
The scientists of the Salk Institute note about persons that can’t do physical exercises because they suffer of various health problems, such as diabetes, frailty, immobility and other physical or psychological factors that cause sedentary lifestyle. The scientists put efforts to develop some specific medications which could benefit for sedentary people so, as exercises benefit for healthy individuals. Now they make experiments with sedentary mice.
As for anabolic steroids, they can cause some muscle-building effects in sedentary people. But people that take anabolic steroids must train and change their diets in order to reach more significant effects.
If new medicines which block NCoR1 are developed by scientists successfully, they will cause essential changes in sedentary persons. But can you imagine which benefits will be caused in sportspersons?
But there is also an important difference between anabolic steroids and NCoR1 suppression. It is known that anabolic steroids cause side results; some of them may be quite dangerous for health and even for life. Furthermore, anabolic steroids can cause serious side effects especially in females. But as for NCoR1 suppression, specialists assure that medicines that will block this genome regulator will not lead to side effects.
There is an article about NCoR1 suppression that has the following title: “NCoR1 Is a Conserved Physiological Modulator of Muscle Mass and Oxidative Function”. It describes results of various experiments which involved mice and nematodes. The experiments have shown that NCoR1 suppression benefits for muscle mass very much. The mice with suppression of this genome regulator had got more increased muscles and ran faster than others.
Unfortunately, the mice with NCoR1 suppression were not compared with the mice that were given anabolic steroids. If these two types of mice were compared, the results of the experiments would be very valuable for further researches and conclusions.
It is possible to notice that elder persons and persons that have muscle dystrophy will be soon involved in researchers to check positive effects of new potential medications.

Carl Fletcher, a shot-putter from Britain, can’t take part in competitions four years. The ban was claimed by the United Kingdom Anti-Doping Agency (UKAD) because he was accused in trafficking anabolic steroids. Carl Fletcher distributed more than 15 types of steroids. It was determined that HGH, testosterone and Trenbolone belonged to the preparations that had been sold by this famous person. The Liverpool Crown Court sentenced this man to 9 months in jail.
It is interesting to note that the shot-putter from Britain never tested positive for any steroids or other performance-enhancing drugs by the WADA. Don’t you find this fact strange? How could it be? One may suppose that methods applied by anti-doping agencies are not effective enough to catch steroid users that participate in international sport competitions.
The WADA and the UKAD try to release sports from cheating and administration of steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs. These organizations also work together with law enforcement organizations in order to reach the needed results.
The UKAD noticed that anti-doping officials would be allowed to supply information about names of sportspersons who took anabolic steroids.
This case showed that the collaboration between the UKAD and law enforcement is very effective. It proved that law enforcement organizations may help greatly to detect the sportspersons that utilize anabolic steroids or other performance-enhancing drugs. It is not possible to overestimate the role of these organizations in catching of cheaters in sports. Andy Parkinson, the CEO of the UKAD, confirms that if law enforcement agencies collaborate with the UKAD, they will have success.
The Merseyside Police and the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) investigated a certain case linked with administration of steroids by officers at the St. Helens Basic Command Unit. It was found out that Fletcher had participated in the illegal activity conducted by some of his relatives. This resulted in Fletcher’s suspension from competitions till November 8, 2015.
