Administration of steroids for testosterone replacement therapy by sportspeople is a controversial issue. There are many debates related to it. It is known by everyone that steroids and certain other related medicines are forbidden in many sports organizations. But if a person should administer these medicines under guidelines of his/her doctor for therapeutic purposes, he/she should receive a therapeutic use exemption. However it is allowed to take even anabolic steroids for medical purposes, such athletes are frequently blamed and called “cheaters”. In fact, it is not fair.
What does Dana White, the UFC president, affirm about usage of steroids for testosterone replacement therapy? Does he demonize fighters that administer steroids in order to enhance their low levels of testosterone? Dana White claims that any person with hypogonadism should apply steroids, if these drugs are indicated by his physician. However it is fair, let mention why certain sportsmen have decreased testosterone levels. It is proven scientifically that steroid abuse may cause suppression of natural testosterone secretion. So, several fighters and other sportspersons that have applied previously steroids for performance-enhancing effects may experience hypogonadism. Hence, their physicians prescribe them administering some steroids in order to increase their testosterone levels.
According to the UFC president, testosterone replacement therapy is legal for all individuals, including professional sportspersons. Thus, if any athlete experiences hypogonadism, he should be allowed to apply steroids prescribed by his physician. He should reach normal testosterone levels which characterize any healthy man of his age.
But Dana White underlines that any fighter or another sportsman who administers anabolic steroids and/or other forbidden preparations for athletic needs must be sentenced to bans. It is necessary to make difference between those that take steroids for medical purposes and those that want to increase muscle mass and strength with the help these preparations. Nobody is allowed to apply anabolic steroids for performance-enhancing effects. It is prohibited in sports. Those that violate anti-doping rules should be punished. Sports must be drug-free.
It seems to be surprising that statements of the UFC president differ evidentially from statements presented by anti-doping officials. As you know, words of several anti-doping officials for steroid users are much harsher than those said by the UFC president.
